The current state of Public Education in underserved communities

Who is actually accountable for ensuring students receive the education necessary to prepare them for the future? Is it the role of the Federal Government, the state, teachers, or the parent? How do we hold each stakeholder accountable for the success of our youth?

Public schools in underserved communities are being taken over by Charter Schools, both with the funding of Charters with State and Federal dollars and the taking of prime real estate within the public school walls.  The idea of choice how does the new educational policies affect underserved communities?

Understanding our penal system of rehabilitative, restorative, reconciliatory, and punitive justice and what arguments can be made for or against abolishing prisons in America.

Is the current system of justice in the United States effective in eradicating crime and decreasing recidivism. How does the current system in the United States compare to other penal systems across the globe.  We will discuss the pros and cons of each of these systems, where the American Penal system falls and how we can best meet the needs of our prison population to ensure they are able to return to society as productive and contributing citizens.  What is the impact on recidivism under each of these systems? What are the effects on society if we abolish prisons all together, are there alternatives to incarceration?
